Artist Statement and Bio:
For Janet Biehl, drawing is a late-life adventure in the use of art for political expression, reflecting her sorrow and anger at injustice, and admiration for those who resist it. She places herself in the tradition of illustrative reportage, or visual journalism, looking looks for acts of heroism in everyday life. In terms of process, the experience of putting pen to paper, and making split second decisions about where to move the nib next, never fails to excite her.
Janet Biehl is an author, translator, and editor as well as an artist, living in Burlington, Vermont, She is currently writing and drawing a graphic novel about her recent visit to the multiethnic democracy in northeastern Syria that worked with the US-led coalition to defeat Islamic State in Syria.
