“Connecting” SeHyeon Cho, 2023

This artwork illustrates the pain and indifference of others. Most people might have gone through adversity. Some people may ask others for help, overcome alone, or indicate they are in need of help. Nonetheless, people nearby may notice your distress but refuse to assist. The rotting heart surrounded by the cement and the dried plant represents adversity, and the three people with their shoes imply people ignoring people’s help. Since people tend to be easily emotional during their teenage times, there are also a smartphone, a brush, a student ID card, and a textbook which all refer to the girl’s status as a student. Additionally, the use of oil paint makes the artwork more realistic thereby emphasizing the girl with the rotten heart.

SeHyeon is a 11th grade student, born in Daegu, South Korea. She had interests in art and design from a young age. In grade 9, she transferred to Daegu International School with the hope of studying more about art abroad. Throughout elementary school, she participated in every art competition and consistently won awards. SeHyeon realized that she had more talent in art than in subjects like math and science. She is excited to improve her artistic skills by taking studio art and AP art classes in 11th grade.
