Sunflowers

Ghosts and reapers fill the pages
of every news source bar one;
Anonymous makes do.

Old ladies wielding pickles,
farmers hauling tanks,
Smokers ditching landmines,
Postmen downing planes.

Civilians stopping columns with their bare hands
while students make cocktails for the troops.

It’s no wonder the world sat up to listen
when true courage was put on display.
The sunflowers will grow after all:
Precarious, but aimed towards the sun.
