“Heat Dome” by Judith Skillman, 11×14, oil on canvas

“Pacific Beach Effect” by Judith Skillman
The inspiration for “Heat Dome” was the event by that name in Seattle and environs. I am from the east coast originally, and over the past forty years of living in the NW, I/we have seen major climate change. For instance, I never thought we would require central air here. But we do. This “heat dome” taxed everyone with its 113 degree temperature high. The piece is also inspired by William Song’s tonal resonance paintings. “Heat Dome” previously appeared in Feral: A Journal of Poetry & Art. It is 11×14, oil on canvas.
“Pacific Beach Effect” evolved from a seascape of Copalis Beach done in oil on canvas. The photograph was taken from the back side of the painting; sun streamed through to highlight the effects of higher levels of CO2 and ozone in the atmosphere.
Judith Skillman paints expressionist works in oil on canvas and board. She is interested in feelings engendered by the natural world. Her paintings have graced the covers of Thin Air Magazine, Pithead Chapel, The Awakenings Review, and other journals. Skillman studied visual art at McDaniel College, Pratt Fine Arts Center, and Seattle Artist League (SAL). Shows include The Pratt, Galvanize, and Seattle Artist League.
