The images were created during a Sunday walk in Kypseli, a neighbourhood
of Athens. The building of the Municipal Market has been reconstructed and
now serves as a centre of culture. I noticed the two “graffiti” of the Communist
Party of Greece on the walls. They were made in November 1944, shortly after
the expulsion of the Nazis from Greece. At that time Athens was full of such
paintings. It is estimated that there were more than ten thousand, but only a
few were preserved over time. In the Municipal Market of Kypseli, which first
opened in 1935, one point was decided to be kept intact: two murals depicting
hammers and sickles, under which are painted the initials of the Communist
Party of Greece: Respect for History with an eye on the Future.
